PELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE SYMPTOMS/CAUSES
- May include vaginal pressure especially when standing throughout the day, difficulty having bowel movements, and urinary problems. May also notice tissue protruding through the vaginal opening.
- This includes fallen bladder (cystocoele), vaginal prolapse, and rectocoele
- Results from the weakening of supporting tissue around the vagina, bladder, and rectum
- Main cause is vaginal childbirth. The condition is aggravated with chronic straining such as occurs with constipation and lifting.
TREATMENT
- Nonsurgical-use of a pessary. Pessary is a device that is placed into the vagina to provide support. This is inserted by the patient each morning and removed in the evening.
- Surgical options-performed entirely through the vagina; sometimes a hysterectomy is required with the repair. Repair entails separating the bladder and/or rectum from the vaginal tissue and bring the strong supporting tissue, which has separated, together in the middle to support the bladder and the rectum. Sometimes mesh material is used if the patients own tissue is not significantly strong enough to provide support. This is especially required if the entire vagina has fallen.
